- One flaw in this argument (Shh! don't tell the phone company :) ) -
-
- Yes, 21.6k connects CAN be achieved with 2400 baud with v.34 or v.FC,
- however, this requires a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of around at least
- 35dB (don't know the exact number, but its gotta be that at least). A
- 2400bps or 4800bps connection with v.34 is still at least 2400 baud - its
- the lowest baud rate v.34 supports for ANY speed. The normal 2400bps and
- 1200bps standards are less than 2400 baud, (and of course 300, etc), but
- thats about it. The lines here almost always get 3429 baud, if not 3200.
- A 28.8 connect is POSSIBLE with a 3200 baud connection if the SNR is more
- than 37dB, but 28.8 connects are not as common as 26.4k because most lines
- in the area don't have the SNR. If the phone company guaranteed 3200
- baud, they'd be right, we are getting it, and 28.8 is possible at 3200
- baud, but we are not always getting that. Sometimes people with really
- crappy phone lines here get 21.6K or less, but even those are generally at
- least 3200baud.
